Hampstead, the historic area of London some 4 miles north west of Charing Cross, is best known today for Hampstead Heath, a large, hilly expanse of parkland, but in the time of the Domesday Book it was in Middlesex in the hundred of Ossulstone. Even before 1086 the area was valuable land granted by King Ethelred the Unready to the monastery of St Peters in Westminster. In the 17th century it boasted a famous well which advertised its medicinal waters and became an important Spa, but was overtaken by much more important Spa towns by the late 18th century. In the early part of the 18th century it held its own race meetings, including a 3-day meeting between Monday 3rd and Thursday 6th July 1732. Such was the success of the meeting that a further meeting was held later in the year on Monday 4th September 1732.
